Aftermarket Alert...
Made up or fantasy pieces have been made for well over 150 years.  Silver retailers would
recreate the serving ends of various existing pieces with more decorative designs, enabling them
to offer a wider variety of serving pieces to their customers.  Presumably these were done with
licensing agreements with the various manufacturers.  Almost always marked on the back with
the retailers' name, these vintage pieces today have become highly collectible and sought after.

Individual silver workers are still creating fantasy pieces today, often
making new pieces using damaged old pieces.  One would hope these silver
workers properly market these as made up items, but pieces such as these
often end up on the secondary market being sold as originals produced at
the factory.

Whether or not to collect these pieces is an individual choice, but buyers
should be aware a hard to find antique piece may just be a newer made-up
item.
Pieces to be aware of include:
Some pieces are fairly easy to spot, such as an ice cream fork made out of an old teaspoon or
five o'clock spoon.  Others are not so easy to determine.  If this is something that matters to you,
ask your retailer before you purchase.
